Beginner Ukulele Family Class - ages 5 to 12 with an adult family member

Learning the ukulele is an easy and fun way for families to share and make music together. Kathleen and Justin from The Music Makers will teach participants how to tune, strum, and play commonly used chords on this fun, little instrument.

The ukulele has become popular recently as it is being used in today's popular music. It's easy to learn so even those with no prior music experience can be successful. Participants will be playing songs right away, giving them confidence in their music-making abilities.

Some practice outside of class will be necessary. One ukulele per family member will need to be purchased for this class.  One tuner per family is fine or the free Kala Ukulele app for your phone can be used. Please see the ukulele info below.

An adult must also sign up to take this class.  Siblings who want to sign up together without an adult must take one of the classes offered for children only.

Beginner Ukulele 1 - offered to ages 8 to 12 and teens and adults

Justin or Kathleen from The Music Makers will teach participants how to tune, strum, and play basic chords on this fun, little instrument.  The ukulele has become popular recently as it is being used in today’s popular music.  It’s easy to learn so even those with no prior music experience can be successful.  Participants will be playing songs right away giving them confidence in their music making abilities.  Some practice outside of the class will be necessary.

Beginner Ukulele 2 - Teens and Adults

The Beginner Ukulele 2 class is for those who have completed Beginner Ukulele 1 or who already know how to read chord charts and play some basic chords in songs with a simple down or up and down strum.  Students will learn new strum patterns and the basics of finger picking. They will learn how to read “tabs" and play a few simple “riffs" on the ukulele.  Working on the same few orchestrated songs each week will provide repetition and confidence in playing. Participants will also learn how to transpose songs to different keys and use a capo to change keys.

Introduction To Ukulele - Ages 5 to 7 years

These classes are designed to give young children a fun and positive first experience with a musical instrument.  Students will learn how to hold and strum the ukulele and some basic technique. They will learn five chords and twelve songs. Movement, games and the use of visuals and percussion instruments make this class fun and engaging.

We will also incorporate percussion instruments and singing activities to provide group music-making experiences. They will not have to learn to tune the ukulele, we will do that for them in each class.  Purchasing a tuner is optional but recommended if a parent would like to learn how to tune the ukulele.  Children will receive songs to play along with at home. Students will not be ready to take the Beginner Classes until they are 8 years old.  An approved ukulele will need to be purchased for this class.  Please see the ukulele info below.

Ukulele Club - Ages 5 to 12 years

Some schools or other centers find the Ukulele Club is a better fit for their program.  If ages must be mixed this is a good format for accommodating this.  Or if an ongoing ukulele program is desired this is also a great option.

The Ukulele Club is designed to give young children a fun and positive experience with a musical instrument. Participants will learn at their own pace and age level how to tune, strum, and play basic chords on this fun, little instrument.  Movement, games and the use of visuals and percussion instruments make this class fun and engaging.  We will have group music making experiences where children will play different parts at their level so each child is successful and has fun in the club. It is a supportive environment where students will learn from and teach one another.  Many of the activities we do will come from the students ideas.
